Three Weeks...

Meghan has now been home over 3 weeks. Tom and I keep looking at each other and saying "this is not the same child we met in Taiwan". She has progressed so much. She knows the rules around here (generally) and pretty much follows them. She hasn't been willfully disobedient in a few days and I feel like we are turning a corner. The testing has subsided...I won.
Our home is ready for Christmas and Meghan is fitting right in.
Today I met with the Student Intervention Team at Meghan's Kindergarten. After listening to the Taiwan Social Workers, Judge, and AIT doctor we were scared that Meghan was worse off than we had originally been told. We basically were told that she was so delayed that she would never be able to catch up, if she was even capable of it. Today I met with the school psychologist, school speech therapist, her ESL teacher, her teacher, and three other district/school therapists, and case workers. They met with Meghan, assessed her, went over her file and basically said they could not find any need for special education for her. They said she is learning like a sponge, picking up English rapidly and eager to learn. She is obedient to her teacher (now) and doing well with the other students. She recognizes half of the alphabet and can count in English to twenty. She has a long attention span and enjoys all learning games. The only thing she might need therapy in is fine motor skills. We are going to meet again at the end of January to reassess her. They were actually amazed at how well she is doing given her previous upbringing. I am encouraged. Her school has many international adoptees and they know what to look for.
